Spring
is the time of year when members and attenders of our Meeting gather to
plant our Gleaning Garden to producing produce for the Lord's Pantry in
Downingtown, Pennsylvania.
Last year, we constructed a raised bed garden down by the creek that
runs by our Meeting as part of the Chester County, Pennsylvania,
Interfaith Gleaning Garden Group. Churches, mosques, and synagogues have
all planted vegetable gardens to help offer the needy a source of fresh
produce. We at Downingtown Friends Meeting have planted a variety of
vegetables, including carrots, string beans, cucumbers, etc.
Members and attenders from our Meeting volunteer to do seed planting,
weeding, and covering of the bed with a wire groundhog-and-deer-
prevention device. During the growing season, others help by committing
one day a week to watering, harvesting, and delivering of produce to the
Pantry.
